What the heck is so good about the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning gameplay?

Every reviewer and their mom is saying that the gameplay for this game is awesome yet they wont explain it past the perk trees and style variety. Is it just a regular button masher past those aspects or what? What the heck is so good about the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning gameplay?
The gameplay is somewhat similar to Dragon Age II.
It is more elaborate than the gameplay in Darksiders and Fable II.

For example if you play a fighter-type you can focus on hammers, swords, daggers or bows...or some combination of these. You can level up each weapon-class and get more advanced abilities.
You also have magical powers to choose from, even if you play as a fighter.

Playing the demo I thought it offered a variety of gameplay options.

Maybe I got spoiled by Dark Souls but I hope the enemies will be more challenging than in the demo because otherwise the game could very well turn into a button-mashing game.
